Reading the Codex

This Unown catch tracker helps you manage all 28 Unown forms: A-Z, question mark, and exclamation mark. Progress is saved locally in your browser, so you can close the page and continue later on the same device. Caught glyphs glow with gold; the forms still hidden in the ruins remain dim.

  1. Mark caught forms: tick the checkbox on an Unown card when that form has been caught.
  2. Find missing Unown: select the Missing filter to show only the forms you still need to catch.
  3. Search quickly: type a letter or form name in the search field to narrow the Unown list.
  4. Back up your collection: use Export to download your progress as a JSON file, then use Import to restore it in another browser or after clearing data.
  5. Reset the tracker: use Reset only when you want to clear every saved caught form.

Catching Unown — tips by game

Where and how to find Unown changes a lot between games. Pick your version below for the key tips.

Gold, Silver & Crystal (Gen II)
Unown live in the Ruins of Alph in Johto, just west of Violet City. Solve the four sliding-tile puzzles (Kabuto, Aerodactyl, Omanyte and Ho-Oh) to release more letters into the underground hall — each puzzle unlocks a different set of letters. Note: only the 26 letters A–Z exist in Gen II; the ? and ! forms were not added until Generation III.
FireRed & LeafGreen (Gen III)
Unown are in the Tanoby Ruins on the Sevii Islands (Seven Island). First you must activate the Tanoby Key in Sevault Canyon by using Strength to push the seven boulders into place. That opens the seven chambers, which together hold all 28 forms (A–Z plus ? and !, introduced this generation). Different chambers contain different letters, so check each one.
Diamond, Pearl, Platinum & BDSP (Gen IV / remakes)
Head to the Solaceon Ruins in Sinnoh. The 26 letters are scattered through the maze and the form you meet depends on the room you are in. Once you have caught all 26 letters, the Maniac Tunnel (Ruin Maniac Cave) extends — talk to the Ruin Maniac — and a final room opens up containing the ? and ! forms.
HeartGold & SoulSilver (Gen IV)
Back to the Ruins of Alph: solve the four puzzles to release the letters. Key tip: while in the main chamber, tune your Pokégear radio to the “Mysterious Transmissions” channel (around 13.5). This biases roughly half of your encounters toward unlocked letters you haven’t caught yet — a huge time-saver. After all 26 letters are caught, the ? and ! forms appear in the entrance room.
Legends: Arceus (Gen VIII)
The 28 Unown are hidden across the Hisui region as a collection, unlocked partway through the Crimson Mirelands (Professor Laventon). Your research notes give cryptic clues for each one; they sit in fixed spots — on signs, statues, trees and ruins. You catch them by throwing a ball directly (no battle); Wing Balls make it easier.
Where Unown can’t be caught (transfer only)
Unown are not catchable in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, X/Y, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon, Let’s Go, Sword/Shield, or Scarlet/Violet base games — bring them in via Pokémon HOME / Bank transfer. In Black/White and Black 2/White 2 the Abyssal Ruins contain no wild Pokémon, so Unown can’t be caught there either (transfer only). In Pokémon GO they appear mainly at events, and some letters are region-locked.
